Java Fern Care Guide
The ultimate beginner aquarium plant. Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) thrives in low light, doesn't need CO2, and tolerates a wide range of water parameters. Just don't bury the rhizome!
The rhizome is the thick horizontal stem where leaves and roots grow from. If you bury it in substrate, it will rot and the plant will die. Instead, attach Java Fern to rocks or driftwood using super glue gel, thread, or fishing line. The roots will grip the surface naturally over time.
Why Java Fern is Perfect for Beginners
Care Requirements
| Parameter | Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lighting | Low to Medium | Too much light causes browning |
| CO2 | Not Required | Grows fine without injection |
| Temperature | 68-82°F (20-28°C) | Wide tolerance range |
| pH | 6.0-7.5 | Slightly acidic to neutral |
| Water Hardness | Soft to Moderately Hard | 3-12 dGH |
| Nutrients | Low to Moderate | Feeds from water column |
Propagation
Java Fern propagates naturally through adventitious plantlets that grow on mature leaves. You don't need to do anything special - the plant does all the work!
- You can also divide the rhizome - cut sections with at least 3-4 leaves each
- Old leaves that are mostly plantlets can be cut off and floated until plantlets mature
- Plantlets can be left attached - they'll eventually separate on their own

Java Fern Varieties
Several cultivars are available, all with similar care requirements but different appearances.

| Windelov (Lace) | Finely branched leaf tips, delicate appearance | 6-8 inches |
| Narrow Leaf | Slender, grass-like leaves | 10-14 inches |
| Trident | Forked leaf tips resembling a trident | 6-10 inches |
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I bury Java Fern in substrate?
No! Never bury the rhizome. Attach it to rocks or driftwood using super glue gel, thread, or fishing line. The roots will grip the surface naturally. Burying the rhizome causes rot.
Why does my Java Fern have black spots?
Black spots are spores - completely normal and healthy! Baby plantlets will grow from these spots. It's how Java Fern naturally reproduces. This is NOT a disease.
How do I attach Java Fern to driftwood?
The easiest method is super glue gel (cyanoacrylate). Apply a dab to the rhizome, press onto driftwood for 30 seconds, done. Alternatively, use cotton thread that will dissolve over time, or fishing line you can remove later.
Does Java Fern need CO2?
No. Java Fern is one of the best low-tech plants and thrives without CO2 injection. It's naturally slow-growing regardless of CO2 levels. Save your money for other plants that actually benefit from it.
