Planted Aquarium Guide
Live plants transform your aquarium from a fish container into a living ecosystem. They oxygenate water, absorb waste, outcompete algae, and give fish natural hiding places.
Why Plant Your Tank?
Natural Filtration
Plants absorb ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate directly, reducing water change frequency.
Algae Competition
Healthy plants outcompete algae for light and nutrients. A well-planted tank rarely has algae problems.
Fish Health
Plants provide cover, reduce stress, and create territories. Fish in planted tanks are healthier and more colorful.
Stable Chemistry
Plants buffer pH swings, consume CO2 during the day, and help maintain stable water parameters.
Choosing Plants
Start with easy plants. Upgrade to demanding species once you have the lighting and CO2 to support them.
| Plant | Difficulty | Light | CO2? | Placement | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Java Fern | Easy | Low | No | Attach to rock/wood | Don't bury the rhizome |
| Anubias | Easy | Low | No | Attach to hardscape | Extremely slow-growing but indestructible |
| Java Moss | Easy | Low | No | Attach to anything | Great for shrimp and fry hiding spots |
| Amazon Sword | Easy | Medium | Optional | Plant in substrate | Gets very large, needs root tabs |
| Cryptocoryne | Easy | Low-Medium | No | Plant in substrate | May melt when first planted, grows back |
| Dwarf Sagittaria | Moderate | Medium | Optional | Foreground carpet | Spreads via runners |
| Monte Carlo | Hard | High | Yes | Carpet | Requires CO2 and high light for carpet growth |
| Rotala Rotundifolia | Moderate | Medium-High | Recommended | Background stem | Colors up red under strong light |
Substrate Options
Inert Sand/Gravel
Cost: LowPros: Cheap, doesn't affect water chemistry, easy to clean
Cons: No nutrients, requires root tabs for rooted plants
Best for: Low-tech tanks with epiphytes (Java Fern, Anubias)
Aqua Soil (ADA, Fluval Stratum)
Cost: HighPros: Packed with nutrients, buffers pH to ~6.5, ideal for Caridina shrimp
Cons: Lowers pH (bad for livebearers), clouds water initially, depletes in 1-2 years
Best for: High-tech planted tanks and Caridina shrimp tanks
Dirted Tank (Walstad)
Cost: LowPros: Organic potting soil provides years of nutrients, very natural
Cons: Messy setup, can release ammonia initially, hard to rescape later
Best for: Low-tech "set it and forget it" heavily planted tanks
Lighting
Light is the engine that drives plant growth. Too little and plants starve. Too much and algae takes over.
Low Light
15-30 PAR at substrate
Photoperiod: 6-8 hrs/day
Plants: Java Fern, Anubias, Crypts, Java Moss
Medium Light
30-50 PAR at substrate
Photoperiod: 7-8 hrs/day
Plants: Amazon Sword, Vallisneria, Sagittaria, Stem Plants
High Light
50-100+ PAR at substrate
Photoperiod: 6-7 hrs/day
Plants: Carpet plants, Red plants, Demanding stems (requires CO2)
Running your lights for 12+ hours doesn't help plants grow faster. It just feeds algae. Use a timer for consistent 6-8 hour photoperiod.
CO2 Injection
CO2 is the biggest growth factor after light. Most easy plants don't need injected CO2, but demanding species require it.
Do You Need CO2?
No CO2 needed: Low light tanks, epiphytes (Java Fern, Anubias), Cryptocoryne, slow-growing plants. These get enough CO2 from fish respiration and surface gas exchange.
CO2 recommended: Medium-high light tanks with stem plants, red plants, and carpet plants. Without CO2, high light + no CO2 = algae explosion.
Pressurized CO2
Most reliable and consistent. CO2 regulator + solenoid + diffuser. Typical cost: $100-250 for setup.
Best choice for serious planted tanks
DIY Citric Acid/Baking Soda
Cheap but inconsistent. Hard to control output. Acceptable for small tanks and budget builds.
Budget option, less consistent
Fertilization
Macronutrients
Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K). Fish waste provides N and P, but K is almost always deficient and must be supplemented.
Deficiency signs: yellowing leaves, holes in leaves, stunted growth
Micronutrients
Iron (Fe), Manganese, Boron, Zinc, etc. Critical for plant health even in tiny amounts. Liquid all-in-one fertilizers cover these.
Deficiency signs: pale new growth (iron), twisted leaves, slow growth
Algae: The Real Story
Algae is not caused by "dirty water." It's caused by imbalance. When light energy exceeds what plants can use (due to insufficient CO2 or nutrients), algae fills the gap.
Green Spot Algae
Cause: Low phosphate, long photoperiod
Fix: Increase phosphate dosing, reduce light to 7 hours
Hair/Thread Algae
Cause: High light, low CO2
Fix: Add or increase CO2, reduce light intensity
Black Beard Algae (BBA)
Cause: Fluctuating CO2 levels
Fix: Stabilize CO2 output. Spot treat with hydrogen peroxide or Excel.
Diatoms (Brown Algae)
Cause: New tank, excess silicates
Fix: Normal in new tanks, disappears in weeks. Nerite snails eat it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I grow plants without CO2 injection?
Absolutely. Many plants thrive without CO2: Java Fern, Anubias, Cryptocoryne, Java Moss, Hornwort, Water Wisteria. These are called "low-tech" plants. You just won't be able to grow demanding carpet plants or achieve the fastest growth rates.
Why are my plants melting?
Most aquatic plants are grown above water (emersed) at nurseries. When submerged, they shed their emersed leaves and grow new submersed ones. This "melt" is normal. Don't pull the plant out. New growth will appear in 1-3 weeks. Cryptocoryne is especially notorious for this.
How do I get rid of algae in a planted tank?
Algae thrives on imbalance. Too much light with too few nutrients (or vice versa) causes algae. Reduce light to 6-8 hours, ensure proper fertilization, add fast-growing stem plants to outcompete algae, and consider Amano shrimp or Nerite snails as cleanup crew.
How often should I fertilize?
For liquid fertilizers: dose 2-3 times per week (or daily with smaller amounts). For root tabs: replace every 2-3 months. Lean dosing invites algae from nutrient imbalance. It's better to dose consistently than to skip.
