Dwarf Hairgrass Care Guide
Dwarf Hairgrass (DHG) creates the iconic lawn-like carpet that aquascapers dream of. When grown properly, it spreads into a lush green carpet that transforms any tank. Requires more care than beginner plants but the results are worth it.
Patience Required
A full DHG carpet takes 2-4 months to establish, even under ideal conditions. It will melt back initially, look sparse for weeks, then slowly fill in. Don't give up too early, this is normal for carpet plants.
Two Main Varieties
Eleocharis parvula
Shorter variety, stays 1-3 inches. Better for small tanks and nano aquascapes. Slightly easier to grow.
Recommended for beginnersEleocharis acicularis
Taller variety, grows 4-6+ inches. More dramatic, "wild meadow" look. May need trimming to stay carpet-like.
Requires more maintenanceCare Requirements
Lighting
CRITICALHigh light is mandatory (70-120+ PAR at substrate). Low light = tall, stringy growth instead of dense carpet. 8-10 hours per day. This is the #1 factor for carpet success.
CO2
Highly recommended for carpet growth. Possible without CO2 but very slow and often fails to carpet densely. Target 20-30ppm. Liquid carbon (Excel) is not a substitute for pressurized CO2.
Substrate
Nutrient-rich aquasoil works best (ADA Amazonia, Fluval Stratum). Fine grain helps runners spread. Can grow in inert substrate with root tabs but results are slower.
Timeline
Week 1-2: Melt and adaptation. Week 3-6: New runners appear. Week 8-12: Filling in. Month 3-4: Full carpet. Dry start method can accelerate this.
Planting Guide
Step-by-Step
- Separate tissue culture or potted DHG into small clumps (5-10 blades each)
- Trim roots to about 1 inch, this encourages new root growth
- Plant clumps 1-2 inches apart in a grid pattern
- Push deep enough that roots are buried but blades are above substrate
- Use tweezers for precision, bare fingers crush the delicate blades
Pro Tip: Dry Start Method
Plant in moist substrate, cover tank with plastic wrap, mist daily, and keep lights on for 6-8 weeks before flooding. This establishes roots faster and creates a denser carpet. Popular technique for competition aquascapes.
Common Problems
Tall, Stringy Growth (No Carpet)
The plant is reaching for light. This is the #1 sign of insufficient lighting. DHG needs high light to stay compact and spread horizontally.
Solution: Increase light intensity or lower light fixture. Target 70+ PAR at substrate.
Yellow/Melting Blades
Normal during initial adaptation (first 2 weeks). If ongoing: nutrient deficiency (usually iron or nitrogen) or poor circulation causing dead zones.
Solution: Dose liquid fertilizer, ensure good flow, trim dead blades.
Algae Taking Over
Hair algae, BBA, or green algae in the carpet. Usually from imbalanced nutrients, too much light without enough CO2, or poor flow near substrate.
Solution: Balance CO2/light/ferts, add algae eaters (amano shrimp), spot-treat with H2O2.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Dwarf Hairgrass grow without CO2?
Technically yes, but it will be very slow and often fails to carpet properly. Without CO2, it tends to grow tall and stringy rather than spreading horizontally. For best results, use pressurized CO2.
How long does it take to carpet?
With high light and CO2: 2-3 months for a full carpet. Without CO2: 4-6+ months if it carpets at all. The dry start method can speed this up significantly.
Why is my DHG growing tall instead of spreading?
Insufficient light is the most common cause. DHG needs high light (70+ PAR at substrate level) to stay compact. It reaches upward when light is too weak, instead of spreading horizontally via runners.
Should I trim Dwarf Hairgrass?
Yes! Regular trimming (cutting down to 1-1.5 inches) encourages horizontal spreading and denser growth. Trim every 2-4 weeks once established. This is called "mowing the lawn."
