Cryptocoryne Care Guide
Cryptocorynes (crypts) are the quintessential low-maintenance aquarium plant. Once established, they thrive in low light, don't need CO2, and spread slowly to fill in your tank. Just be patient through the initial "crypt melt" phase!
Crypt Melt is Normal!
When you first add crypts to your tank, the leaves may turn brown and melt away. This is completely normal. The roots are adapting to new water conditions. Leave the roots planted and new leaves will emerge within 2-4 weeks. Don't remove the plant!
Care Requirements
Lighting
Low to medium light (20-50 PAR). Crypts actually prefer lower light and may develop algae issues under intense lighting. 6-8 hours per day is ideal.
Substrate
Crypts are heavy root feeders. Use nutrient-rich substrates like aquasoil or add root tabs. They can grow in plain gravel with root tabs, but growth will be slower.
CO2
Not required! Crypts grow perfectly fine without CO2 injection. Adding CO2 will speed up growth but is unnecessary for healthy plants.
Temperature
68-82°F (20-28°C). Crypts tolerate a wide range. Sudden changes can trigger melt, so keep temperature stable when possible.
Popular Varieties
C. wendtii is the most forgiving for beginners. C. parva is the slowest growing but makes an excellent foreground carpet over time.
Planting & Propagation
How to Plant
- Bury the roots completely but keep the crown (where leaves emerge) above substrate
- Space plants 2-3 inches apart, they will spread via runners
- Plant root tabs nearby for best growth
- Expect some melt in the first 2-4 weeks, this is normal
Propagation
Crypts propagate by sending out runners through the substrate. Baby plants will pop up a few inches from the mother plant. Once they have 4-5 leaves, you can separate them by cutting the runner or let them form a natural carpet.
Common Problems
Crypt Melt
Leaves turn brown/transparent and dissolve. Caused by sudden changes in water parameters, new tank conditions, or shipping stress.
Solution: Leave the roots planted. New leaves will grow back in 2-4 weeks.
Yellow Leaves
Older leaves turning yellow while new growth is green indicates nutrient deficiency, usually iron or potassium.
Solution: Add root tabs or liquid fertilizer.
Slow/No Growth
Crypts are slow growers by nature. Expect 1-2 new leaves per month. No growth at all usually means poor substrate or insufficient light.
Solution: Add root tabs, ensure light is reaching the plant.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my crypt leaves melting?
Crypt melt happens when the plant adjusts to new water conditions. It's completely normal after purchasing. Leave the roots planted and new leaves will grow back within 2-4 weeks. Avoid large water chemistry changes.
Do cryptocoryne need CO2?
No. Crypts are one of the easiest low-tech plants and grow perfectly fine without CO2. Adding CO2 will increase growth rate but isn't necessary for healthy plants.
How fast do crypts grow?
Crypts are slow growers, expect about 1-2 new leaves per month under good conditions. They make up for slow growth by being extremely low maintenance once established.
Can I grow crypts in gravel?
Yes, but add root tabs. Crypts are heavy root feeders and will grow much better with nutrient-rich substrate or supplemental root feeding.
