Amazon Sword Care Guide
The Amazon Sword is the classic centerpiece plant for freshwater aquariums. With its large, flowing leaves and dramatic presence, a single sword plant can transform any tank. Hardy, beginner-friendly, and impressive when grown properly.
These Plants Get Big!
Amazon Swords can grow 12-24 inches tall with leaves spanning 8+ inches wide. A mature plant can easily fill half of a 20-gallon tank. Plan placement carefully. They work best as background or centerpiece plants in tanks 30+ gallons.
Care Requirements
Lighting
Medium to high light (50-100+ PAR). Will survive in low light but growth will be slow and leaves smaller. Higher light brings out better coloration in red varieties.
Substrate (Critical!)
Amazon Swords are heavy root feeders. They MUST have a nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs. Plain gravel alone will result in a struggling, melting plant. Use aquasoil or add root tabs monthly.
CO2
Not required but beneficial. Swords grow fine without CO2 injection. With CO2, expect faster growth and larger leaves.
Water Parameters
Temperature: 68-82°F. pH: 6.5-7.5. Very adaptable to different water conditions. Tolerates hard water well.

Planting & Propagation
How to Plant
- Bury roots completely but keep the crown above substrate
- Place a root tab directly under the plant
- Position as background/centerpiece, they need space to spread
- Trim dead/damaged leaves at the base to encourage new growth
Propagation
Amazon Swords produce runners (long stems) that grow out of the water if the tank allows. Plantlets form along these runners. Once a plantlet has 4-5 leaves and visible roots, cut it from the runner and plant it.
Tip: You can weight down the runner to keep plantlets submerged while they develop roots.
Common Problems
Melting Leaves / Dying Plant
The #1 cause of Amazon Sword death is lack of root nutrition. These plants are heavy root feeders and will starve in plain gravel.
Solution: Add root tabs immediately. Replace monthly.
Yellow/Transparent Leaves
Usually indicates nutrient deficiency (iron, potassium) or the plant is adapting to new tank conditions (transitioning from emersed to submerged growth).
Solution: Add root tabs, trim dying leaves, be patient with new plants.
Algae on Leaves
Large, slow-growing leaves are prone to algae. Usually caused by too much light, excess nutrients in water column, or poor water circulation.
Solution: Reduce light duration, add algae eaters (otos, nerites), improve flow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Amazon Sword melting?
Most commonly: lack of root nutrition. Amazon Swords are heavy root feeders and NEED root tabs or nutrient-rich substrate. Also, newly purchased swords often shed their emersed-grown leaves, this is normal, new submerged leaves will grow.
How big do Amazon Swords get?
Standard varieties reach 12-20 inches tall with leaves 6-8 inches wide. A mature plant can span 12+ inches across. They're best suited for tanks 30+ gallons as a centerpiece or background plant.
Do Amazon Swords need CO2?
No, they grow fine without CO2. However, CO2 will significantly increase growth rate and leaf size. Root nutrition (tabs or rich substrate) is far more important than CO2 for swords.
How do I propagate Amazon Swords?
Amazon Swords send out long runners with plantlets. Once a plantlet has 4-5 leaves and visible roots, cut it from the runner and plant it separately. You can also divide mature plants at the crown.
